As with every Evolution model the latest one has some considerable improvements over the last, here's an overview of what's packing more punch and how the the Evo VIII MR has improved further still.

The Evo shown at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show is dubbed the Evolution MR, taking the MR (Mitsubishi Racing) designation traditionally reserved for Mitsubishi Motors high performance models and first used on the Galant GTO.

The Evolution VIII MR boasts improved road holding by exploiting to maximum advantage the advanced features of Mitsubishi's own all-wheel control system and using exclusively configured slick-response Bilstein shocks to realise handling characteristics with the higher degree of control necessary for the vehicle to remain predictable and stable. Forged alloy road wheels reduce unsprung weight, while the centre of gravity has been lowered by using aluminium for the roof panel and through weight reductions to the upper half of the body to realise more natural roll characteristics through corners.

A special process bonds the aluminium roof panel to the steel framing and with the strategic location of reinforcements results in a high rigidity body.

Detail improvements to the electronic all-wheel drive system, to the ACD and Super AYC handling systems and to the Sports ABS systems, together with the Evolution's legendary and now lighter suspension achieve an unprecedented degree of quality in handling characteristics. This has been verified in a gruelling testing program over the original Nordschleife circuit at Nurburgring, notorious for it's bumpy and undulating surface and twisting corners.

Improvements to the turbocharger and cams have raised maximum torque. The engine also benefits form improved redline performance and has been tuned for competition use with emphasis on power output in the mid-to-high speed bands.

Exterior and interior trim elements enhancing the Evolution VII MR's sporty, premium value image include black headlamp reflectors and a carbon finish dashboard.
